Can't Go to BEA? Come to Utah

I'm all kinds of jealous of everyone that will be at BEA this week. I'll be right here, blogging away like normal. But don't be sad if you're home like me! Just come out to Utah next Saturday, June 4, for the Utah Festival of Books.

There won't be ARC's, or free books, or swag. But there will be authors and illustrators and plays and dance groups and book binding and The Princess Bride. I'm not kidding; I can't make that random assortment up. Also, it's being hosted at BYU, which was my Hogwarts for the six years I was a student there. (don't worry - I got two degrees).

Oh yeah, and it's free.

In case you need a visual, here is where to find Utah. That red splotch is close to the BYU/Provo area.

All joking aside, I think the Book Festival will be a lot of fun. I wish I could go (it's 10 minutes from my house!) but I have something that day. So stop over there and say hi to Kiersten White or Ally Condie or James Dashner for me.

  1. I wanted to include this story but it didn't fit with the post, so it's going here.
I actually did meet Ally Condie once a couple of months ago. She was signing books at the Costco by my house and I was there to buy pizza. There was no one at her table so I wandered over with my greasy plates and told her how much I liked her book. And then felt like an idiot.
She was very nice. And little.
    True story.

  2. That sounds like a blast! While the effort to drive the 6 hours from Las Vegas to Provo is considerably less than to get to New York, I'm still too broke to make it :(

  3. @Kathy: I can see how The Perks of Being a Wallflower could get banned, as it deals with a lot of controversial topics, but it's such a well-written novel that I personally feel it should be read in English classes everywhere!:) I also loved Paranormalcy, and have a review of it coming up later this week:)

  4. WOW, Kiersten White AND Ally Condie is going to be 10 minutes from you and you aren't dropping EVERYTHING!! What is wrong with you??? LOL

  5. Kate I always think the drive to Vegas is shorter than it really is. There's a whole lotta nothing in Southern Utah. I got my first (and only, hopefully) speeding ticket on my way to Vegas... trying to make the trip shorter!

Nina thanks! I'm excited to read that one. I loved Paranormalcy, too. :)

Reading Angel I know, right? :) I actually won't even be in Utah for the book fest. My husband keeps telling me I could drive home for it, but I think I'll just stay on vacation with him instead. I am kinda sad about it, though.

  6. Hahah, you make me laugh "Don't worry, I got 2 degrees" lol!

I was in Logan for about 3 months back in 2007 singing with the Utah Festival Opera. It was also the summer HP7 came out and I had 3 midnight book parties to choose from. It was my best literally experience away from NYC ever. I wish I could go to the festival!

  7. I plan on going... I hope.

  8. Lah that's so cool! I'm always impressed with people who can sing. Summer is definitely the time to visit Logan, since it's freezing in the winter. That's great you had fun at the HP party. I went to a midnight party to get my book, too.

Suey if you go I'll have to read all about it on your blog. I'm sad I can't make it.

  9. @Kathy and friends: In the behind-the-scenes-section here in the BYU Bookstore we've been crazy busy with preparations, but things have unfolded quite nicely and it looks to be an awesome day (as long as the weather is nice). We're just grateful to everyone who has put in so much time and effort to get this festival ready!

    Pray for good weather~

  10. Woohoo! I feel like I'm moving on up if the BYU Bookstore is commenting on my blog. :)

I hope the weather is great, especially since the 4th is also the free fishing day.

  11. Oh my goodness! I would LOVE LOVE LOVE that. Maybe I will do this one year.
